Skin Care Tips for Women in their 20's

Skincare tips for women in their 20s differ much from women in their 30s, 40s, and even teens. Regardless that women in their 20s aren’t that far out of their teenage years, or that far away from nearing their 30s, there are still specific skincare tips for women in their 20s that most of us don’t give enough thought to.

Exercise - Exercise might not be one of the usual skincare tips for women in their 20s we often hear about, but it is an important one! Exercise helps control stress levels in the body, and it also helps with hormone regulation. When your hormones, primarily cortisol, the stress hormone, are out of control in unhealthy levels, havoc occurs on your skin. Then, take into account that being overweight from not exercising can also lead to hormonal issues such as PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), or to problems with your metabolism, and you’ve got a whole other issue on your plate probably causing you stress. Exercise also improves blood flow and moves lymph flow through the body. Lymph removes toxins from the body, including those that lead to acne. Be sure when you exercise, you do it without makeup so you avoid unnecessary breakouts. What’s more important to you? Option A, good skin or option B, impressing the people exercising with you with a full face of makeup on? I choose option A anytime!

Eat a Clean Diet - I know, you’re tired of hearing this. We all are, but it really is true! A clean diet does more than give you a great body, hun! It also improves your skin like you wouldn’t believe. Avoid too much salt, highly processed foods, sugar (even natural sources), and avoid problematic foods that might cause issues like gluten for some, dairy for others, and for those of us without intolerances to either of those, just eat clean in general. Don’t eat refined foods or processed diet foods. Foods with an ingredient label should be only from whole food sources, not tons of names you don’t understand. Just remember, drink your water, avoid sugar, and eat lots of greens and fish. Those 4 things will do more for your skin than anything else because each one of those fight inflammation that leads to acne and aid in clearing the skin. For women in their 20s, this is a critical time to eat healthy, especially coming out of the teenage years where junk prevailed most likely, and before you get older where you just stop caring.

Moderate Your Stress - Along with exercise, there are other things you need to do to take care of your hormone health at this time. The 20s are very, very stressful, and doing whatever you can to start helping your hormones and not hurting them will only help your skin, your heart, and your sanity! I control my stress through journaling, meditation (not too serious, just deep breathing), yoga, and daily walks. I also like to spend alone time during the day when I can, even if it’s just during my coffee in the morning, or eating lunch outside in nature. Do what you can and your stress levels will drop, which contributes to helping your skin.

Add Fats - I’m sure in your teens you probably heard fats would make you fat, but by your 20s, I hope you’ve stopped believing this myth. In fact, when I started eating healthy fats, my skin turned around for the better. Healthy fats do two things for your skin. First, they fight inflammation that leads to acne, and secondly, they ward off wrinkles. I don’t know about you, but I’m eating my healthy fats, what about you? I choose raw coconut, fish, almonds, walnuts, hemp, chia, flax, and dark chocolate. Other sources include avocados, olive oil, and coconut oil. Generally, avoiding animal saturated fats is best overall, but don’t avoid plant fats. You’re literally feeding your face when you eat them! Your 20s are the best time to start eating healthy fats so you don’t lose essential collagen in the skin, which is made of protein and fat. Without it, sagging and wrinkles occur much faster and are much harder to reverse. I eat a good bit of fat and look younger now than I did at 16, and in fact, most people don’t believe me when I tell them I’m out of high school and nearing 30.

No Tanning - I know a lot of you aren’t going to like this, but please stop caring about looking like a golden goddess by tanning in the sun and tanning bed. This comes from someone who spent 8 years doing so, and couldn’t get rid of my skin issues no matter what I tried. Trust me, tanning ages you faster than anything else. I had sun damage, wrinkles, and acne, and thought I was doing myself a favor by tanning. Now, I never lie out in the sun, and have accepted this might mean I’m a little paler than I wish. So, I use toxic free tanning lotion during the summer, and during the winter, I just don’t worry about it. Your 20s are a critical time to take care of your skin and stop aging it faster than necessary.

Be Birth Control Smart - If you’re on birth control, you should know you have options. Not all forms of birth control help control acne, and some can even lead to weight gain that causes acne. There are many forms of birth control available, and whatever you choose to do is your decision, but be sure you discuss all forms, including more natural ones that might not affect you the same way the pill typically does.

Supplement Savvy - Another tip you should consider in your 20s is being supplement savvy. What does this mean? It means choosing smart supplements that aren’t diet pills like you’ve heard so much about, but instead, help with your anxiety, hormones, and your skin. I choose to take magnesium daily for controlling anxiety and nervousness, along with helping recover from exercise. Magnesium also helps with staying regular, which is important for clear skin, believe it or not. Other supplements for your skin include fish oil, chlorophyll tablets, and also a good multivitamin with 100% of your daily selenium needs. Selenium wards off wrinkles and also helps your hormone health as a bonus.

Tips For How To Stop Biting Your Nails

Are you wondering how to stop biting your nails? It can be a terribly hard habit to break but it can be done. There are many benefits to be gained once you do stop. Your hands will look so much more attractive.
Make The Decision -  Part of the equation in how to stop biting your nails is making the decision that you are going to do it. You need to harness your willpower and just decide this is going to be done. Deciding to do something and feeling determined gives you much greater odds than deciding to do something half-heartedly. You may even want to make it a little public and tell those you are close to. Not only does this encourage you more but it can help to keep you accountable.
Buy Some Bad Tasting Polish - There are many products on the market that can help you when you are trying to stop biting your nails. You apply the product to your nails and the bad taste should give you a deterrent to stop this habit. Why would you want to continue to put something in your mouth that tastes unpleasant? A few times of getting a taste of this should be enough to stop you from continuing. Another benefit is if you do forget and begin to bite your nails, you will get a quick reminder.
Chew Gum - Chewing gum is a great thing to do in place of biting your nails. When you catch yourself wanting to bite your nails, reach for a piece of gum instead. This gives you something to do with your mouth and will hopefully alleviate some of the urge you have to bite your nails. This is also a very simple alternative. It is cost effective and you probably already have gum on hand, anyways.

Realize It Is a Nervous Habit - You know, biting your nails is a nervous habit. I know this because it is something I did years ago myself. It is something people do when they are nervous in any given situation. Realizing that can help you to break the habit. It helps you to be aware that the temptation to bite your nails may rise when you are in certain situations.
Reward Yourself along The Way - You know, I do not know about others but rewards work very effectively for me. I try to build rewards in for myself when I am trying to reach a goal. It can be something small like swinging by a coffee shop for your favorite beverage or something bigger such as a pair of boots you have been wanting. Whatever fits your personality and your budget. You know what works best for you in this situation.
Think about All The Germs You Are Putting in Your Mouth - This is a great, great motivator, especially for germaphobes like me. I do not want to come in contact with any germ I can avoid and many of you are the same way. Just thinking about all of the germs you are introducing to your body when you bite your nails could be a great deterrent. This is especially true in cold and flu season. When you get ready to bite your nails, think of all of the different illnesses you could catch if you do.

How To Get Perfect Skin

Having nice looking skin is a goal for many people. These 7 ways to get perfect skin are useful for both men and women, even though it seems that women are more concerned with how their skin looks than men are. Feel free to add your own tips for improving your skin. I don’t think there can be too many tips!

Drink Lots Of Water - Water is such a huge part of the human body. A lack of water causes the skin to look dry and gives people an overall haggard appearance. Drinking 8 cups of water isn’t as difficult as it seems. Remember that a cup is only 8 ounces, which isn’t much at all. People try to stick to 8 glasses of water and they choose the biggest cup in their cabinet. They spend more time running to the bathroom than anything else The body can only absorb so much at a time and the rest is turned into urine, so it isn’t necessary to guzzle 32 ounces every couple of hours.

Don’t Sleep With Makeup On - Makeup is an excellent substance for clogging pores and sleeping in it just allows all your pores to remain clogged for a longer period of time. Washing your face before bed time is highly recommended to reduce the number of outbreaks in acne. Clogged pores are basically what acne is. Sometimes acne outbursts are due to stress as well, so it wouldn’t hurt to get rid of some stress in your life as well.

Wash with a moisturizing soap - I find that using certain types of bar soap causes my skin to feel itchy as soon as I dry off. Using a moisturizing liquid soap seems to be more beneficial for my skin. There are quite a few brands of liquid bath soap that have those cool little oil beads in them that burst as you wash. I love those! They really do the trick on keeping my skin from feeling so dry and tight after I shower.

Use A Face Peel Twice A Week - I love how fresh my face feels after peeling off a chemical mask. These are a lot different than the masks that use clay or mud for the main ingredient. Clay and mud masks are great for reducing oil content in your skin, but the chemical peel is better for unclogging pores and getting rid of black heads.

Use Moisturizer - Apply facial moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 to reduce the damage sun can cause. Use a body moisturizer right after showering, so your body can better absorb it. Winter weather here is so dry that I find using an oil instead of a lotion keeps my skin feeling softer longer.

7. Stay Out Of  The Sun Or Use Lots Of Sunblock - If you have an occupation that has you out in the sun most of the day, then you probably already know how important sunblock is. Wearing a large brimmed hat, long sleeves, and slathering on the sunblock is the best way to reduce the effects of the sun. The general rule tends to be that the lighter your hair color is, the more sun protection you need.

Some Dangerous Chemicals Found In Your Makeup Bag

We eat chemicals and breathe chemicals but did you know that we also willingly apply them to our faces? They can be found in our mascaras, eye shadows, foundations, lipsticks!

Parabens - Check your eye shadows first, I’m sure you’ll find at least one that contains this toxic, potentially cancerogenous chemical. Parabens are a very common ingredient of cosmetics today as they help extend the product’s shelf-life. Unfortunately, they don’t do our face or bodies any good! You see, Parabens can cause allergies, rashes and are even suspected of causing breast cancer!

Dimethicone -
Dimethicone is a silicone polymer often used in a wide variety of beauty products. It is FDA approved which, of course, doesn’t make it totally safe. Except being a major environment pollutant, this silicon oil can even mess with your ability to have kids! Yup, you heard well – in case you’re using a prescription product high in Dimethicone, you should consult your doctor on whether or not you should continue using it while being pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

Synthetic Fragrances - Well, I’m sure you’ll remember this post next time you’re about to apply some of that great-smelling lip gloss or spray your favorite perfume. You know why? Because these fragrances are one of those toxic matters you should stay away from. Did you know that even high-end brands use these so called “secret chemicals”? But, wait, why “secret”? Well, simply because they ARE NOT LISTED ON THE LABEL! Yes, ladies, an average perfume contains at least 14 of these toxic chemicals that have a nasty habit of accumulating in our body tissues.

Petrolatum - Or petroleum jelly or oil (as it is often listed on the label) can seriously clog your pores. Now, I don’t need to tell you how bad can that get, I mean you know clogged pores aren’t exactly the first step or having beautiful or healthy skin. Why do companies use this ingredient? Because it cheap! You see, we bring them profit and they use cheap materials! Outrageous!

Dibutyl phthalate - This harmful toxin, also known as DBP was commonly used in nail polishes to prevent chapping. I’m saying WAS because most companies have removed it from their list of ingredients due to the fact that it doesn’t only have a negative effect on our reproductive systems but causes birth defects and cancer too. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and its activists are especially proud for forcing L’Oreal to stop using this toxin… I’m not sure why… L’Oreal nail polishes sucked and I bet they suck even more now!

Color Pigments - Umm, does it mean we should give up MAC? GRRRR, I knew I shouldn’t have thrown the box! Anyways, back to the pigments and bad news. You see, these synthetic colors can contain heavy metals and almost all of them are tested positive for the ability to cause cancer. Tough luck! Plus, they aren’t exactly skin-friendly either which means they can irritate not only sensitive but totally normal skin too.

Some Common Health Issues For Women Face Today

While you can't avoid all health issues women face, doing what we can here and there makes a huge difference in helping each of us avoid disease and other health problems as much as possible.

PCOS(polycystic ovarian syndrome) - One of the most common health issues women face today is PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome. This involves a hormonal imbalance in a woman’s body, where she produces too much testosterone, and not enough beneficial estrogens. This can show up in signs such as increased facial hair, depression, irregular periods, weight gain, thyroid issues, mood swings, problems sleeping, cravings for carbohydrates and fertility problems. Luckily, this condition can be treated with a low carbohydrate diet and possibly, medication. By monitoring insulin levels you can effectively reduce the hormones that contribute to stress, weight gain, and blood sugar problems that lead to mood problems, hormone imbalances and fertility problems. Talk to your OBGYN if you feel you have this health condition.

Type 2 Diabetes - With increased job stress, constant access to fast food and eating on the go, a more sedentary life and busy schedules, it’s easier than ever to develop Type 2 Diabetes, without even realizing you have it. Weight gain, blood sugar problems, fatigue, depression and hormonal signs can all signify you might have Type 2 Diabetes. If you eat a good bit of processed food, refined carbohydrates, sugar and unhealthy fats, chances are you might have Type 2 Diabetes and not even know it. Untreated, it can lead to heart failure, kidney failure and multitudes of other issues. Obesity also puts you at igh risk of Type 2 Diabetes. If you think you have Type 2 Diabetes, or your lifestyle might cause you to develop it, talk with your doctor to discuss treatment options.

Fertility Problems - Due to risks associated with Type 2 Diabetes, PCOS, stress, poor nutritional habits and more, fertility problems can become an issue for many women today. Fertility can be affected by a large amount of things, many of which many women aren’t even aware of. Some causes of fertility problems can occur from STDs, improper nutrient absorption, or be caused from exposure to environmental toxins, or from smoking. If you’re looking to conceive, be sure you stay aware of fertility risks you face, and do your best to take care of yourself in every form and fashion so you can conceive exactly when you’re ready to.

Cancer - Many women already know of the cancer risks they face today, but still neglect to take action to stay on top of their cancer prevention. For instance, I am guilty of this due to the fact that I live an extremely healthy lifestyle, yet fail to get annual pap smears like I should, and don’t always discuss certain things with my doctor like I probably should. I am also around a good bit of secondhand smoke through family members, unfortunately. All of these things seem harmless, but put me at risk for cancer, even if they don’t seem like a big deal. Cancer is one of the most leading causes of death today in women, behind heart disease. To keep yourself safe and sound, take preventative methods as much as possible to stay on top of cancer prevention.

High Cholesterol - Due to high stress, secondhand smoke, poor diet, or lack of exercise, high cholesterol can occur before we know it. It can also come from certain hereditary risks, but every woman has the power to take action against high cholesterol, and should. High cholesterol can weaken the heart, and lead to heart disease. Constant stress and fast food intake are two of the quickest ways to develop high cholesterol. Be sure you eat healthy, stay active, stop smoking or don’t start, and practice stress-lowering activities such as yoga, meditation, walking, staying in touch with friends, or simply having some quiet time to yourself each day. Lowering your stress won’t cure an unhealthy diet, but it can greatly contribute to fighting high cholesterol.

Fatty Liver - Another issue many women face and aren’t aware of it, is a risk for a fatty liver. Now, don’t get offended here ladies! I’m not calling any of you fat, so don’t worry! Even women who are thin can develop a fatty liver, as it has nothing to do with your weight, though that can be a sign. Your liver is essentially your detox organ. It not only filters out the bad stuff but also burns fat. Think of your liver as a machine. When it can do its job, it runs smoothly. It gets rid of toxins and the less of this it has to do, the better. The less our liver has to work to take out the bad, the more it can provide energy to our bloodstream and essentially, burn fat in our body. When we burden our liver with toxic foods, alcohol, environmental toxins, and more, it becomes too busy trying to get rid of these things, and in the meantime, becomes known as a “fatty” liver. This is where fat builds up around the organs due to toxicity and it can easily be reversed. You need to take special vitamins that can help detox the liver, along with changing your diet and quitting smoking and drinking. A clean, alkaline diet is one of the best things you can do for your liver, along with adding foods like beets, carrots, ginger, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, and lemon. Milk thistle tablets, Vitamin C, green powders, and other herbal supplements can also help detoxify your liver. Be sure before you begin any supplements, you take precautions to choose healthy ones. Untreated, a fatty liver can lead to other problems, so stay on top of this health issue however possible. Exercising is also a sure fire way to combat a fatty liver alongside a healthy diet.

Heart Disease - As I’ve mentioned above, heart disease is the number one killer of women today. Do not put yourself at risk for heart disease, either from stress, diabetes, a poor nutrition and exercise regimen, untreated family health risks, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Stay on top of your heart health. It is critical to your life, and all aspects of your health. Eat a healthy diet full of whole foods, exercise, and be sure you manage your stress. Quit smoking and drinking if you already do, and eat enough calories so malnutrition is not an issue.

Eating Disorders - Sadly, eating disorders affect woman aged 11- 55 today in the largest numbers. Many of us never consider that eating disorders can be something we face, but we find ourselves caught up in one before we know what’s happening. Eating disorders are nothing to play around with, because they can lead to many health problems, including many of the ones already mentioned. It’s almost impossible to avoid developing an eating disorder, as many times, they come from stress. What I can tell you from experience is that you can stay on top of this issue by embracing other things to control your stress, not food, or lack of food. I know it is not that easy, but as someone who suffered for 15 years and bore repercussions such as early menopause, depression, malnutrition and more, I can tell you it is worth every effort you can make.

Stylish Clothing Items For Winter Weather

1. Scarves - Scarves are of some of the best pieces of stylish clothing for winter. I love wearing stylish fluffy scarves with just about anything, and I like simpler wool ones as well. You can even layer thinner scarves for a trendy look, or double wrap smaller scarves as a warm headband. Scarves are great to pair under thinner jackets if you don’t feel like wearing a heavy coat too. This keeps things trendy, and keeps you toasty!

2.Fleece Headbands -
If you’re working out or just headed out to run errands, try putting on a fleece headband to keep your ears warm. I love walking outdoor in these, and also like wearing them if it’s chilly and I don’t want to wear a toboggan. Plus, fleece headbands come in multiple colors and have nice, thick bands to hold your hair back. They also come in many prints, and best of all, they won’t mess your hair up.

3.Bomber Jackets - Bomber jackets have been pretty popular for awhile now, and with good reason. These jackets are some of the most fashionable winter clothing items to own, and they’re also warm. You can buy leather bomber jackets, or varieties from other material as well. These jackets are less bulky than standard coats, and they put a trendy spin on staying warm in winter.

4.Jeggings - Have you heard of jeggings? I’m sure you have. Jeggings are one of those items most people either hate or love. I’m a huge fan of American Eagle’s new skinny leg jeggings. They look exactly like jeans, but when you wear them they feel like sweats. They’re a great way to stay warm, but not look like you have on sweatpants. I love anything that serves two purposes like jeggings. Try on several types, as many differ between brands, so you can find which one works for you.

5. Beret Hats -
I think beret hats are so cute! They’re warm, trendy, and very feminine too. Beret hats are perfect for wearing wherever you go, and are friendlier to your hairstyle than a tight toboggan.

6. Oversized Sweaters - A new trend I’m absolutely in love with this winter is over sized sweaters. I just adore them! They are comfortable, trendy, and best of all, warm! You can find them in multiple colors, styles, and patterns. Some of my favorites are beige and grey colored wool varieties, which you can easily pair with jeans, leggings, or even over a pair of dress pants to wear with heels. Oversized sweaters also have a really feminine appeal to them. Plus, so long as you don’t wear them with baggy sweatpants, they won’t look sloppy or like you’re being lazy either.

7. Wool Lined Blazers - Blazers are also a really popular item this year, and I specifically love the wool-lined varieties for winter. They’re specially lined to be warmer, but don’t appear like a coat on the outside. While I love my wool peacoat, I don’t want to wear it all the time to stay warm. Wool-lined blazers are the perfect alternative, which you could easily pair with pants or jeans, and even a cute warm scarf to complete your look.

6 Things That Damage Your Hair

1. Swimming Pools - The intensity of the chlorine level in swimming pools is absolutely amazing and not in a good way. Chlorine severely dries out hair, which can be avoided by wearing a nifty little invention called a swim cap. If you insist on not wearing one of these fashion accessories, then you might want to invest in some of the Redken Sun Shape Swim Cream I mentioned earlier or keep your head out of the water all together.

2. Perms - Perms can be just as harmful as bleaching. Thankfully the chemicals used in perms aren’t quite as destructive to hair as they used to be. Many perm kids include a solution that conditions hair and gets rid of that horrible smell often associated with perms. But, again, staying away from perms is the healthiest alternative for your hair.

3. Bleaching -
Not bleaching your hair at all is the best way to protect it against the harmful effects of bleaching, but avid hair-bleachers won’t go for this. Applying a lot of conditioner might help soften over-bleached hair, but it will by no means put it back to normal.

4. Sun Exposure - The sun’s rays aren’t only harmful to your skin, but also to your hair. Redken makes this amazing product called UV Rescue After-Sun Conditioner. It is great stuff to have on hand if you spend a lot of time in the sun. There is also another product Redken has that is called Sun Shape Swim Cream. This protects hair against the effects of the sun and even against chlorine in swimming pools too.

5. Blow Drying - This is another one of these hair styling implements that stresses your hair. The intense heat dries out the hair and causes it to become more brittle. If you can let your hair air-dry most of the time, it will be much better off. If you truly need to blow dry it, then make sure to have a really good conditioner on it beforehand. Using a lower heat when drying your hair might take longer, but it won’t be as destructive on your lovely strands of hair as a super hot hair dryer will be.

6. Over styling of hairs - Constant styling can cause hair to break and split more so than if you simply brush it and let it go. I know not everyone has hair the looks great on its own. My hair is extremely unruly when left to do its own thing. I have to at least keep it in a braid if I don’t want to scare my family with my locks!
